Stuart is an electorate for the South Australian House of Assembly. It covers the northeast part of the state extending from just north of the Barossa Valley all the way to the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales borders, and extending west to include Port Augusta. It is the second-largest electorate by area in South Australia.
The electorate is named after John McDouall Stuart, who pioneered a route across through this area from the settled areas in the south to the port of Darwin in the north. This route later became the path of the overland telegraph and then The Ghan railway.
The electorate was created in the 1936 redistribution, but did not exist between 1993 and 1997 when the name was revived.
It is currently held by Graham Gunn for the Liberal Party of Australia, the longest-serving current MP anywhere in Australia, having first been elected to Eyre in 1970.
Graham Gunn held his seat in the 2006 election by just 233 votes after distribution of preferences. He will retire at the next election when he will have finished a four decade-long career.
The Country Labor candidate for the seat at the 2010 election will be Sean Holden.
