electrical stimulation training

Sports Science and Medicine: electrical stimulation training

Training achieved passively by stimulating muscle with an electrical current. The device used for this type of stimulation is called an electrical muscle stimulator. It is used to treat muscle injuries and muscle atrophy when a limb has been immobilized. Some coaches believe that electrical stimulation training accelerates muscle growth and they have used the technique to train elite athletes. Most exercise scientists believe that this form of training is a valuable aid to rehabilitation, but that its use for muscle building purposes is unproven. Improper use of EMS or poorly designed devices can be dangerous, causing severe burns.
