Elizabeth of Valois

Columbia Encyclopedia: Elizabeth of Valois
Elizabeth of Valois (văl'wä, Fr. välwä'), 1545-68, queen of Spain, daughter of Henry II of France. Originally intended to wed Don Carlos, son of Philip II of Spain, she was married (1559) to Philip himself. The unfounded legend of a tragic love between Elizabeth and Carlos is often found in literature, notably in Schiller's Don Carlos.
