Lucinda "Elle" Robinson was a fictional character on the long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours and was portrayed by Pippa Black. In June 2009 it was announced that Elle would be leaving.[1] Her final scenes were filmed on 13th August and her last appearance was broadcast on 3rd November.
History
Elle was born off-screen to mother Gail (Fiona Corke) and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) in October 1989, a fraternal triplet along with identical brothers Cameron and Robert (both played by Adam Hunter). Gail divorced Paul whilst pregnant, and moved to Tasmania where she raised the children. It is inferred that Paul paid them occasional visits during Elle's youth.
Birthdate confusion
In episode 5566, Elle states that her birthday is May 30th. This is impossible, given that Gail had given birth in October 1989. It could be attributed to a slight concussion after Elle's car accident but her age is still suspect, being 19 years old when arriving in Ramsay Street in 2005 instead of 16.
Storylines
Arrival
In 2005, Elle lied to Gail about going to visit a friend in Byron Bay when in fact she headed for Erinsborough to see Paul. She first appeared at the Scarlet Bar and mingled with Connor O'Neill (Patrick Harvey), Ned (Daniel O'Connor) and Stuart Parker (Blair McDonough), Toadfish Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) and Serena Bishop (Lara Sacher), all the while keeping her identity a secret. When the group reconvened to a hotel and made some mischief, Paul arrived on the scene and was shocked to see Elle, his daughter.
Elle was thrilled at the prospect of staying with her father at Number 22, but was quickly disappointed when she found out his girlfriend, Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte), was lodging with them. Elle and Izzy butted heads for a few weeks, during which Elle laced Izzy's food with drugs in order to convince Paul of her instability.
Plane Crash
Along with a number of Ramsay Street residents, Elle was involved the Lassiter's plane crash during a joyflight to Tasmania. She was one of many who were stranded in the ocean after the plane went down over the Bass Strait. Seeing Elle floundering in the water, Izzy managed to pull her to safety on a floating piece of debris; after that, the two stopped warring and began to accept each other as a kind of adopted family.
Ned Parker
A mutual attraction formed between Elle and Ned, and they soon started dating. Down the track he admitted he had feelings for another woman - Izzy.
In an attempt to get over Ned, a key moment for Elle was when she stripped completely naked in front of Ned's brother Stuart, only to be rejected by him because of his dedication to his hospitalised wife Sindi Watts (Marisa Warrington), despite him admitting later that he was tempted.
Dylan Timmins and Fake Illness
Dylan Timmins (Damien Bodie) was Paul's protege, and he and Elle were often teamed up or pitted against each other for business assignments for Lassiters. Despite the rivalry, Dylan and Elle developed feelings for each other. To Sky Mangel (Dylan's ex-girlfriend) and the Timmins family's dismay, and Paul and Izzy's delight, Dylan and Elle became a couple.
Sky revealed that she was pregnant with Dylan's child. Dylan promised Elle it wouldn't affect their relationship, but nevertheless he couldn't help but spend increasing amounts of time with his ex, leaving Elle with the fear that he would reunite with Sky. Desperate to keep him from straying, Elle concocted a plan with Paul's support: she would tell him she had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It worked, and Dylan chose to stick by her. However, the news spread that Elle was sick and she received well-wishes from a fooled neighbourhood with tremendous guilt.
Cameron's Death and Reunited with Dylan
Elle admitted to her brother, Cameron (Adam Hunter),that she lied about her illness when he booked tickets for them both to go on the orient express. Cameron was disgusted and had an argument with Elle and Paul where he said they were both as bad as each other before storming out. Elle and Paul both wondered where he was because they hadn't heard from him. After Elle's brother Robert escaped from prison and was ran over she tried to ring Cameron but the phone that was in Robert's belonging's started ringing and both Elle and Paul realised it wasn't Robert that was run over it was Cameron. As it turned out Robert hadn't escaped from prison and was just hiding from the guards. Cameron was in a short coma and when he woke up he began to get better. But he admitted to Elle that he wasn't getting better and didn't want Paul to worry so said that he was feeling fine. After this Cameron was rushed into theatre for emergency surgery where he later died. Elle was distraught and Dylan came to visit her where she told him the truth that she lied about her illness so he would not get back together with Sky.
Tormenting Max Hoyland
Elle had feelings towards Max Hoyland (Stephen Lovatt) (Max was inadvertently responsible for Cameron's death). She began playing tricks on him, such as putting cardboard in place of football tickets and stealing his car. After stealing his car, Elle found out that Max hired an investigator to try and catch Elle red-handed. She ran up to the car and screamed at the investigator eventually making him produce a fake report showing that Elle was at a day spa instead of stealing Max's car. After the fake report was produced Max committed himself to a hospital and had a mental breakdown, he left Erinsborough on a bus. Elle felt guilty and unsuccessfully tried to cheer up the Hoylands, after Loris Timmins (Kate Fitzpatrick) invested in Lassiter's Hotel, Dylan tried to be spiteful by ruining her future plans for Lassiter's, but this sent them back into each other's arms. Elle was tormented by Boyd Hoyland and Stephanie Scully no longer wanting anything to do with her after they found out she was responsible for Max's mental breakdown.
Paul's Wedding and the Return of Max
When Paul married Lyn Scully (Janet Andrewartha) and shortly afterwards admitted to his bride that he cheated on her while they were engaged, Elle left Erinsborough to spend Christmas with her mother. When she returned the following year, she spotted Max in a shopping mall car park, with a woman and her children. She kept this information to herself for a short period, and she followed Max home one day. After telling Janae Timmins. Janae went to see Max told him that everyone missed him and wanted him to come home. He did and he returned back to Ramsay Street for a couple of months.
Tricking Paul and Paul's Brain Tumour
When her father tricked many residents of Ramsay Street into thinking Dylan and Carmella Cammeniti (Natalie Blair) slept together, Elle split up with Dylan. She later discovered the ploy, and schemed with Oliver Barnes (David Hoflin) to take control of Lassiters, her fathers company. When they succeeded, Elle kicked Paul out of their home on Ramsay Street and forced him to move in with Ned Parker (Daniel O'Connor). However, Paul was later diagnosed with a brain tumour and Elle took him back in when he recovered, although he suffered amnesia from the surgery and could not remember much from the past twenty-or-so years (not even his children or many of his ex-wives).
Oliver Barnes
Oliver and Elle got together, and she helped him search for his biological mother. The woman, Rebecca Napier, shocked the Robinson family by saying it was possible that Paul was Oliver's biological father - making him and Elle half-siblings. However, after a DNA test, it was dismissed.
Carmella and Oliver's Baby
Oliver discovered that his ex-girlfriend Carmella was pregnant with his child. Fearing that this would be a repeat of the past, Elle broke it off with him.
Lassiters
Elle quit her job as Lassiter's manager when Will Griggs (Christian Clark), the 51% shareholder of Lassiter's, demanded she fire Oliver or Paul. Instead, she resigned, giving 25% to Paul and 24% to Oliver. She signed up as a journalist for the Erinsborough News under Brad Jordan.
Dance Party Disaster and Riley Parker
Whilst scouting an illegal dance party with Riley Parker (Sweeney Young) for the Erinsborough News, Elle and Riley are trapped in the debris after the roof of the warehouse venue collapses. They are eventually found by the SES team, and Elle was rushed to hospital. After being released, Elle began to have horrific flashbacks of being trapped but refused to believe, even after experiencing two panic attacks, that she was suffering from post traumatic stress. In addition, she began to associate Riley with the disaster and this dampened the opportunity for a romantic relationship between them. Riley and Paul tried to help her deal with it but she pushed them away.
With some persuasion, Karl helped Elle fight her post traumatic stress. Elle then apologised to Riley for the way she treated him after the roof collapse, telling told him that whenever she saw his face it bought back the terrifying memories. Riley then asked her where that left them, and Elle confirmed that they were "just good friends".
Paul's Affair
Elle discovered that her father was having an affair with Kirsten Gannon (Nikola Dubois). She forced Kirsten to end it before Rebecca, Ned and Mickey found out. The secret eventually leaked and Oliver, appalled that Elle kept it hidden from himself and Rebecca, split up with her.
Owning the General Store and Death of Marco Silvani
Later on Elle and Marco Silvani paired up in a joint business to run the General Store. When Marco passed away from the injuries sustained during the bushfire in 2008, Carmella (his deathbed wife) decided to take over his half of the business, making "frenemies" Elle and Carmella partners in business.
Pete Ferguson
Whilst reporting on Pete Ferguson with Susan Kinski, the pair were kidnapped and held hostage by Ferguson. Being confined to a car all night triggered Elle's bad memories of the dance party. Ferguson wanted Paul Robinson to print his article in the paper, with the agreement that there be no police contact and the two women be set free and unharmed. In a moment of desperation, Paul instead printed a "wanted" notice on the Erinsborough News front page resulting in Ferguson holding Elle as bait. Steve, the man Ferguson was targeting, agreed to a tradeoff and went with Paul to face Ferguson. Elle was unharmed, but for weeks afterwards she held a grudge against Paul for valuing a headline over his terrified daughter.
Donna Freedman
Following the arrest of the corrupt Sgt. Freedman, Elle welcomed Donna into Number 22 and the two formed a strong friendship. At times Elle even stepped into the role of Donna's "legal" guardian. She has shown protective, motherly behaviour toward Donna much to Paul's surprise.
One night Elle witnessed Donna, Rachel and Bridget with used pregnancy tests, one of them positive. After questioning the upset girls she discovered to her relief that Donna was not pregnant, and eventually finds out that it is Bridget.
After Donna's family, including her manipulative and un-loving mother, Donna briefly moves out to stay with her mother against her own wishes. After several turns, Donna finally ended up living with Elle again and Elle drove her mother out of the street. They're really close and good friends. Elle has kept showing sometimes motherly instincts towards her, one time even grounding her.
Lucas Fitzgerald
Elle had a soft spot for Lucas, but he was dating Libby. When Libby chose Dan. Elle and Lucas had a bit of a relationship but it's on and off. Elle and Lucas are now dating. Elle asked Lucas to move in after their relationship progressed and Lucas accepted.
Elle and Lucas' relationship soon hits a rough patch when Steph reveals she has feelings for Lucas.
When Elle finds out about Lucas' gambling problem she kicks him out. Later when she goes out to see him she sees him in the arms of Steph! Now she is going to get revenge on her ex, but whos life will she ruin, hers or his?
Car "Accident"
When Elle bought a "classic" car she went out to town with Donna. Lucas found this hilarious, calling the car a 'lemon' as he could hear that there were problems with the engine- Elle ignored Lucas. He later finds her and Donna stranded, with a flat tire and a broken engine, but rather than let Lucas help, Elle decides she can manage alone- causing her to chip a nail, and catch her shoe in a drain and break the heel. Lucas is highly amused- much to Elle's annoyance- but helps her get back to the coffee shop anyway. He insists that Elle should buy him dinner to say thank you, but Elle played hard to get. Donna laughed at Elle and declared that Elle loves him.
Christmas
At Christmas Elle bought Lucas a stubby holder with rhinestones and Lucas gave her a 20 dollar note taped to his chest. On Christmas Eve Lucas and Elle kissed and ended up sleeping together. Lucas then had Christmas lunch with Elle, Paul, Donna and Ringo.
The Ramsays
Later in the year, Elle and Lucas discovered a locket under Harold's house. Inside was the name Anne Robinson, Elle's grandmother. Elle and Lucas then found a box with a key to a safety deposit box. Inside the safety deposit box was Helen Daniels' will. It was thanks to this that Elle found out about her long-lost cousins and the fact that her Dad had a long-lost sister. When she eventually told Paul about his sister Jill Ramsay, Paul said he already knew about her and told Elle to drop this. Elle refused to listen and so Paul went to see Jill one day to sort things out. The end result was they ended up arguing, Paul pushed Jill in front of a car and she died. Paul denied he was guilty and went on the run from the law. However he eventually gave himself up and after admitting to Rebecca that he didn't kill Jill, he just felt responsible for her death, he handed himself into the police saying he was guilty.
As it is, Rebecca had managed to find out that Sophie Ramsay witnessed the whole accident but Paul is unwilling to have her as a witness as he feels he has put the family through enough. When Paul phones and hands himself in Det Sgt Michaela Morris (Jacqueline Brennan) turns up to arrest him. When Paul is being led down the driveway of number 26 Sophie spots him and on realising he's been arrested, realises she can't stand by and see him punished for a crime he didn't commit. She then admits to the Police she saw what happened and that Paul is innocent.
Erinsborough News
In 2009 Elle quit her job as a journalist at the Erinsborough News after she disagreed about the way her father was running stories on the Kennedy's surrogacy. Paul later agreed not to make the Kennedys front page news but it was too late to change Elle's mind, despite him telling her that he bought the paper for her. She told Paul that she wanted to try and make it as a journalist without his help and the only way to do that is to make a clean break away from the paper. On the 11/9/09 Elle got a job offer at the New York Times and was ready to leave for New York. She made the decision not to go because of Donna, and was later forced into not going because James Linden stole all her money.
Engagment with Lucas
In late October 2009, Lucas proposed to Elle at the Year 12 Deb ball. Elle's initial reaction was to run away without giving Lucas an answer. Lucas later came to see Elle and told Paul and Rebecca he had proposed, Paul told Lucas that he was trying to hold Elle back by proposing. After a talk, in which Elle told Lucas about selling the house back to Paul, she finally accepted the proposal. Dan, like Paul, wasn't happy to hear about the engagement. He believed Elle was the cause of Lucas's gambling addiction and getting married would cause Lucas to relapse. This caused the two brothers to fight again.
Departure
After discovering a potential news story about a housing development, Elle went to the site, but discovered that her ex-boss, Josh Burns was already covering the story. Despite her anxiety about enclosed spaces, Elle decided to go underground to investigate, with Josh following behind. The ladder they were using gave way and Josh fell to the ground. After crawling through a tunnel and getting help, Elle returned to Josh and tried to keep him awake long enough for the paramedics to arrive. Josh died from his injuries, which upset Elle greatly, Lucas persuaded her to finish Josh's last story as a tribute and she agreed. Both Paul and Lucas read the article and realised that Elle needed to be at a bigger paper. Lucas decided to call the New York Times and accepted their offer on Elle's behalf. Lucas then told Elle that she got the job and that he would be going with her. However, Elle told him that the job was for a Middle East correspondent and that she would have to go alone. She then said a sad farewell to Lucas, Donna, Paul and Rebecca at the airport, before leaving for her new job.
