Ellen Auerbach

Photography Encyclopedia: Ellen Auerbach

Auerbach, Ellen (née Rosenberg; 1906-2004), German-born American photographer. In 1929, after training as a sculptor, she learned photography with Walter Peterhans in Berlin. With Grete Stern she took over Peterhans's studio after he joined the Bauhaus, producing portraits and advertising work under the name ringl + pit. She emigrated in 1933, and in 1937, after marrying the stage designer Walter Auerbach, settled in the USA. She did commercial work, including travel assignments, and taught photography. In 1965 she took up educational phototherapy. Auerbach has both exemplified and helped to shape photography's aesthetic development since the 1920s by the radical modernity of her commissioned and private work, her zest for experimentation, and interest in everyday subjects.
