Ellernklipp
Ellernklipp, a story by Th. Fontane, published in 1881 and sub-titled Nach einem Harzer Tagebuch. The orphan Hilde is brought up by a widower, the Heidereiter (or head gamekeeper) Baltzer Bocholt, with his son Martin. The two young people fall in love, but Bocholt, jealous of his son, pushes him over the edge of the cliff (Ellernklipp). Baltzer and Hilde are married, but some time later Baltzer perishes mysteriously at the scene of the still unsolved murder. Hilde devotes herself to works of charity and dies young.
