History
The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Esher and Walton and Weybridge urban districts. It is named for the old Elmbridge hundred, which appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as Amelebrige.[2]
Politics
Following the 1 May 2008 borough elections, the overall make up of Elmbridge Borough Council is Conservatives 32, Residents' Groups 19, Liberal Democrats 7, Hinchley Wood Residents' Association 2.[3] Members of Parliament are Ian Taylor MP (Esher & Walton) and Philip Hammond MP (Runnymede & Weybridge).
"The Beverly Hills of Surrey"
On 11 August 2006 Elmbridge was labelled 'The Beverly Hills of Surrey' by newspaper The Daily Mail[4], owing to the fact it reportedly has the best quality of life in Britain following a survey conducted by Halifax Estate agency.
Two prominent dwellers during the 18° century were Admiral Hopson and Admiral Charles Wager , who found Elmbridge very convenient as it was on the road from London to Portsmouth ( cf www//elmbridgemuseum ).
Twinning
Elmbridge is twinned with Rueil-Malmaison, France.[5] , a wealthy residential suburbia about 8 miles West of Paris .
