EMC Legato NetWorker - now known simply as EMC NetWorker - is an enterprise level cross-platform backup and recovery suite produced by EMC Corporation. It provides backup functionality to Linux, Windows, Macintosh, NetWare, OpenVMS and Unix environments.
It is set up as a so called data zone containing a central NetWorker server that manages both storage nodes (accessing the backup media) and clients. Core server platforms are AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris SPARC & x64, SGI IRIX and Tru64
Multiple datazones can be managed by the NetWorker Management Console which is bundled with the NetWorker distribution.
NetWorker comes with support for many hardware devices like tape drives, tape libraries, virtual tape libraries, disk units and Avamar deduplication devices.
The client software is used for the backup of file system and system state. The so called modules are available for the hot backups for major database products like Oracle, MS SQL Server or Sybase. Other modules are provided for the backup of applications like MS Exchange or SAP. All data can either sent to a remote storage node or LAN-free stored directly to locally attached storage devices. In order to automate the generation of snapshots on the supported storage arrays the snapshot modules can be installed.
The NDMP module can be used for the client less backup of NAS Filers like EMC Celerra or Netapp.
VMware virtual machines can be backed up either directly by installing the client on the virtual machine (the client is licensed by physical node)or through the VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) interface provided by VMWare. NetWorker also supports backup and recovery of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V virtual servers using the Volume Shadow Copy Services interface for protection of the parent and child partitions (guests) as well as applications running within virtual machines.
History
NetWorker came to EMC by the acquisition of Legato in October 2003
Legato was founded in 1988 by four individuals who worked together at Sun Microsystems: Jon Kepecs, Bob Lyon, Joe Moran and Russell Sandberg.
