Review

Gordian Knot's second album is very much grounded in the British prog rock movement of the 1970s, and particularly in the sound of King Crimson. The almost wholly instrumental effort has a couple of very direct links to those good old days in the presence of one-time Yes/King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford on half of the tracks, as well as ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett on three. This doesn't open up as much territory as multi-instrumentalist and principal Gordian Knot member Sean Malone's inspirations did. It's just accomplished instrumental prog rock with a heavy fusion flavor, and a rather somber, cerebral air, though there are plenty of hard rock dynamics, and occasional traces of other textures, like '70s Soft Machine and flamenco guitar. For those that admire Sean Malone's instrumental prowess, there are a couple of solo showcases for his work on bass ("Arsis") and stick ("Grace"). ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Other information

  • First time all former members of Cynic perform together since they disbanded in 1994.
  • On all typesetting of the title of the album, the M is italicized (EMERGENT)
  • "A Shaman's Whisper" was originally entitled "Whispers at Gesthemane"[1] but was renamed because Sean Malone wanted a more general title that others could share and interpret themselves.
  • "Muttersprache" in German literally means "mother tongue", or native language. Sean Malone stated somewhat cryptically in his blog: "Muttersprache" is the lingua franca of Emergent.[1]
  • The CD packaging included a cardboard overlay. On the front it featured a description of the members of the band and blurb about the "type" of music contained. On the back side were four lines which have the appearance of a list of songs, though only the last one is featured on the album.
  • Front side:

sean malone's second gordian knot project
unites members of cynic, king crimson, genesis
and fates warning.
On EMERGENT these icons of diverse genres weave
a common fabric, forging a daring new direction for
progressive rock and metal.

  • Back side:

the purest heartbeat
drowned in oceans of nearness
uncoiled
singing deep mountain
