Leith, Emmett (1927-2006), American physicist. After graduating from Wayne State University, Leith joined the research team of the University of Michigan's Radar and Optics Laboratory, where he was assistant head during the 1960s. In 1962, working with Juris Upatnieks on synthetic aperture radar, he conceived the idea of recording images by interference methods using coherent light, and succeeded in producing the first transmission hologram. He became professor of electrical engineering at the University of Michigan and Director of the EEES Department's Electro-Optics Laboratory, where he worked on imaging through scattering media, an important area in medical imaging.
