Review

En Extasis is Thalía's debut album for EMI as well as a huge stride forward for her career. Her preceding series of albums for Fonovisa were fairly successful in Mexico, but more so because of her celebrity than because they were especially good albums. In particular, they were weighed down by assembly-line pop schmaltz -- poorly written and even more poorly produced. So En Extasis is the first album where Thalía gets to sing well-written songs over lively productions. On a pair of songs, "Piel Morena" and "Me Faltas Tu," she even gets to work with two of Latin music's premier hitmakers: producer Emilio Estefan, Jr. and songwriter Kike Santander. And too, there's a song written by future Kumba King A.B. Quintanilla III, "Amandote," as well as a cover of Latin legend Juan Gabriel, "Gracias a Dios." Sure, there's some passable material interspersing these standout songs, but for the most part, Thalía gets first-rate songs to sing here and consequently she'd never sounded as good as she does here. All of the aforementioned songs are highlights, as is "Maria la del Barrio," the catchy theme song from her popular telenovela of the time. "Piel Morena" is probably the most notable song, not only because it's a dynamite album-opener but also because it was her first international hit, putting her on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart for the first time (a chart she would come to dominate by the end of the decade). The key appeal of "Piel Morena," along with most of the other highlights here, is that its rhythm is anything but generic. No, the music of En Extasis doesn't neatly fit into any one category such as banda or Latin pop. It's dynamic music propelled with bits of cumbia, bits of pop, bits of salsa, bits of banda -- a bit of most everything great about Latin music, in fact. She would further develop this approach on her subsequent, more fully fledged album, Amor a la Mexicana, but it's certainly on display here and makes En Extasis her first of several noteworthy albums. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

En Éxtasis ("In extasy") is the fourth studio album from the Mexican singer Thalía. This production became a huge success in Latin American and other Spanish-speaking countries, such as Spain. This is the first album Thalía recorded with the company "EMI Music" and the second which does not count with the participation of Alfredo Díaz Ordaz, who had produced Thalía's two first albums and who was his first love, until he died from Hepatitis, in 1992.

"En Éxtasis" was produced by the Mexican producer Oscar López, except for the songs "Piel Morena" and "Me Faltas Tú", which were produced by Emilio Estefan and Kike Santander. The executive producer of the album was Mario Ruiz. This is the first Thalía album that was released to all South America and Spain. Thalía's two previous albums, "Mundo de Cristal" and "Love", had also been released in some Central-American countries and the United States. However, it was thanks to "En Éxtasis" that Thalía came to be known in all the American Continent, from Argentina—where she has conquered many fans—to Canada. Today, many people remember her for the song "Piel Morena", which was a huge success when released and is still played and danced worldwide.

Apart from the 1995 Latin American hit "Piel Morena", "En Éxtasis" features other hits such as "Gracias a Dios" ("Thanks to God"), "Amándote" ("Loving you"), "Juana" and "Quiero Hacerte el Amor" ("I want to make love to you"). Besides, the album includes several cover versions. One of them is the song "Gracias a Dios". Although it had originally been interpreted by the Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, this song actually reached universality thanks to Thalía's performance. At the same time, it contributed to making her the extremely famous celebrity she currently is. In Argentina, for instance, "Gracias a Dios" was used as the soundtrack of one of Thalía's most viewed soap-operas, "María la del Barrio" ("Mary from the block"), instead of the song with which it was originally released in México (and which also became a great hit in that country). The second cover included in the album is the song "Me Erotizas"("You turn me on"), originally performed by the French singer Herbert Léonard, under the name "Sur des musiques érotiques" ("About erotic musics"). This song is included in his 1987 album "Laissez-nous rêver" ("Let us dream") and was very popular in France at the end of the 80's. The French lyric of it was written by two very well-known French song-writers, Vline Buggy and Julien Lepers. However, the Spanish version of the lyric was written by Thalía, who had some expertise in this field since she had already been the author of other lyrics included in previous albums, such as the song "Sangre" ("Blood"), which was one of the first singles of the album "Love" and which Thalía dedicated to the memory of her boyfriend, Alfredo Díaz Ordaz, who had just passed away. Thalía also wrote the lyric of the song "Lágrimas" ("Tears"), included in "En Éxtasis", presumably inspired by the death of her beloved companion. The third and fourth covers of the album are two songs which were originally composed and performed by two Argentinean singers: one of them is "Fantasía" ("Fantasy"), by Gabriela Anders; the other is "Te Quiero Tanto" ("I love you so much"), by Eddie Sierra (this song is included in his 1990 album "Está todo bien" -"Everything is alright"). In the case of the latter, the lyric of the song had to undergo some changes, not only to adapt it to the fact that it was a woman who was performing it this time, but also because its author made use of some words typical of the Argentinean Spanish (such as "vos", a way of saying "you", though this word is also used in some Central-American countries, such as Honduras), and referred expressly to Buenos Aires (one of the original verses goes: "estoy atrapado entre la luna y Buenos Aires" -"I am trapped between the moon and Buenos Aires"-; whereas Thalía sings: "estoy atrapada entre la luna y los mares" -"I am trapped between the moon and the seas"-).

The number of songs included in "En Éxtasis" is not the same in all the countries where it was released. This is due to the fact that, at the same time the album was being released, Thalía's most successful soap-opera, "María, la del Barrio" ("Mary from the Block"), was being broadcast in all Latin American Countries. This largely contributed to expand Thalía's popularity. As soon as people began to know about her, they started to call to the radios asking to hear new songs by her. In the different countries, people liked different songs. Therefore, EMI had to do some research in order to find out which songs the audiences had liked the most and which ones they expected to find in the CD. For example, the Brazilian version of the album features, as bonus tracks, a remixed version of the songs "Amándote" ("Loving you") and "Gracias a Dios" ("Thanks to God"), and the soundtrack from "María la del Barrio" ("Mary from the block"). However, this version does not include the song "Juana". On the other hand, the Argentinean version of the album features, as a bonus track, only a remixed version of "Piel Morena".

"En éxastis" became such a huge success wordlwide that EMI released a special edition of it, named "Bailando en Éxtasis" ("Dancing in Extasy"), which only contained remixed versions of the most popular songs featured in the original album, including a karaoke version of "Piel morena". This edition was a limited one, and it was not available in many Latin-American countries (for instance, in Argentina).

"En Éxtasis" gave her multiple gold and platinum records and made her win several prizes. Besides, this album paved the way to the extremely successful international career Thalia was going to embark upon in the years to come.
