Entartete Kunst

Entartete Kunst, a National Socialist conception applied to virtually all non-representational painting, sculpture, and graphic art. An exhibition of ‘degenerate art’ was held in Munich in 1937, and a number of public monuments and frescoes were destroyed or defaced. Some of the artists concerned emigrated; a ban was imposed on those who remained in Germany, but some continued their work in seclusion. A fictitious painter of ‘entartete Kunst’, who is subjected to ‘Malverbot’, is an important figure in the novel Deutschstunde by S. Lenz.
