Review

Second Skin continued to work the badlands between downbeat material and drum'n'bass with the second long-player from bassist Charlie Tate and DJ Matt Harris expanding upon their 1997 debut, the impressively titled Imperial Solution. Live instrumentation played a greater role, a result of working with a number of musicians on a substantial tour, while the pair also began to experiment with vocals, with an Esther Phillips a cappella used to great effect within "California Suite" and Melissa Heathcote's gorgeous delivery of "Koobesq." The remaining 12 tracks represent Kooba well by mixing interesting breaks, odd vocal snippets, and abstract melodics. ~ Kingsley Marshall, All Music Guide
