Enzon Pharmaceuticals has deadly diseases PEGged. The firm's proprietary PEGylation process enhances existing pharmaceutical treatments by attaching a customized molecule to the pharmaceutical; the attachment of the molecule ensures the treatment's longevity in the patient's blood by enabling the pharmaceutical to avoid the immune system's natural response. Enzon's FDA-approved leukemia drug Oncaspar employs PEGylation technology, as does Adagen, an enzyme-replacement therapy for a rare immunodeficiency commonly called "Bubble Boy Disease." Enzon also receives royalties on several PEGylated drugs marketed by others, including Merck's PEG-Intron for hepatitis C and OSI Pharmaceuticals' Macugen.
