Diascope is another name for a transparency projector. Episcope is the corresponding name for an opaque projector, which images the light reflected from a document or small object on to a screen. An epidiascope combines both functions. Because of its optical inefficiency an episcope needs a powerful light source and a wide-aperture lens. As the type of illumination is inappropriate for transparencies, some epidiascopes have a lever mechanism to realign the light source for slide projection. Epidiascopes are cumbersome devices, and are being largely supplanted by scanning systems linked to projectors of LCD arrays.
