(anatomy) The broad, articular surface on each end of a vertebral centrum. The thin layer of cartilage between the epiphysis and the shaft of a long bone. Also known as metaphysis.

growth plate

A plate or disc of cartilage between the epihysis and diaphysis of a bone. It is the only region in a long bone that can generate new cells. Elongation of a bone stops when the cartilage in the plate ossifies (see ossification).
