equal area map

Geography Dictionary: equal area map

A map so drawn that a square kilometre in one portion of the map is equal in size to a square kilometre in any other portion. Equal area maps of the whole globe tend to be elliptical in shape, and severely distort the shapes of regions far from the equator.
