Equal Exchange is all about being fair to coffee growers. The business is an employee-owned cooperative founded with the aim of paying fairer prices to Third World growers of coffee beans. Equal Exchange distributes organic roasted coffee beans and ground coffee; the product line has expanded to include cocoa, sugar, tea, and snacks. The cooperative was founded in 1986 from Nicaragua by Rink Dickinson, Jonathan Rosenthal, and Michael Rozyne, who met each other as managers at a New England food co-op. Equal Exchange has helped kick off what has become known as the "fair trade" movement (along with other entities such as Global Exchange, a similar West Coast organization).
