Equatorial Counter Current
The Equatorial Counter Current is a significant current in the Pacific and Indian Oceans that flows west-to-east at approximately five degrees north. The Counter Currents result from the need to balance the movement of water to the west of each ocean, caused by the westerly flowing North and South Equatorial currents. In El NiƱo years, this current intensifies in the Pacific Ocean. Books such as Life of Pi have taken place on such currents, which portrays the life of a 16 year old boy named Piscine Patel on a life threatening journey across the Pacific Ocean.
