erector spinae

A massive group of back muscles that are prime movers of extension, lateral flexion, and rotation of the spine. The erector spinae consist of three columns: the iliocostalis, longissimus, and spinalis muscles. These muscles resist forward bending at the waist and act as powerful extensors to raise the trunk from a flexed position to an upright position; they also help a person to maintain an upright stance.
