Escalon is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 5,963 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Escalon is located at 37°47′39″N 120°59′42″W / 37.794055°N 120.995022°W / 37.794055; -120.995022.[1]According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²). 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²) of it is land and 0.49% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 5,963 people, 2,056 households, and 1,597 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,930.0 people per square mile (1,128.6/km²). There were 2,132 housing units at an average density of 1,047.6/sq mi (403.5/km²). It was estimated that the population would grow to 7,257 people as of July 2006. This is a 21.7% change. The racial makeup of the city was 85.23% White, 0.57% African American, 0.96% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 8.72% from other races, and 3.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.87% of the population. There were 2,056 households out of which 41.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% were non-families. 19.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.31.In the city the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.The median income for a household in the city was $49,797, and the median income for a family was $55,488. Males had a median income of $46,554 versus $27,059 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,016. About 6.9% of families and 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.
