Monthly review founded by Emmanuel Mounier, Georges Izard, and Denis de Rougemont in October 1932. Mounier developed in its columns his doctrine of Personalism. The review's circulation probably never exceeded 4, 000 copies, but its religious and intellectual influence has been considerable. Mounier ran Esprit as a forum for debate between believers and non-believers. Considerable friction arose with other titles of the Catholic press—L'Aube, for instance—which also sought a dialogue with non-believers.
