Gonnet, Esteban (1830-68), French photographer and surveyor, active in Buenos Aires, where he was probably a partner, with another Frenchman, in the Fotografia de Mayo studio in the 1860s. Gonnet was one of the earliest photographers of Buenos Aires and its rural hinterland. The fine albumen prints published in albums entitled Recuerdos de Buenos Aires in 1864 capture the contrast between traditional and modern aspects of the developing city. He also recorded the life and customs of the gauchos of the surrounding cattle ranches. For a long time most of his work was attributed to the Italian-born photographer Benito Panunzi (1819-94).
