Lieutenant Esteban José Martínez Fernández y Martínez de la Sierra, Marina real, circa 1785.

Esteban José Martínez Fernández y Martínez de la Sierra, or simply Esteban José Martínez (1742-1798) was a Spanish navigator and explorer, native of Seville. He was a key figure in the Spanish exploration of the Pacific Northwest. In 1774, he was second in command of the Spanish frigate Santiago, piloted by Juan José Pérez Hernández, the first recorded European expedition to contact the Haida in Queen Charlotte Islands. In 1789, Martínez commanded an expedition to build a fort in Nootka Sound, but he abandoned the region the same year because of the Nootka Controversy.
