Eston is a town within the borough of Redcar and Cleveland which is in North Yorkshire, England. With other suburbs it forms a Greater Eston area.
The large town of Eston lies at the foot of Eston Hills, a ridge 150-200 m above sea level, and a part of the Cleveland Hills. The land around Eston has been occupied since 2400 BC, but it was the discovery of ironstone in Eston Hills by industrialists from Middlesbrough (most notably Henry Bolckow & John Vaughan) in 1841 that saw Eston's development start in 1850, from two cottages to a thriving mining town.
Eston today has undergone change. The Eston square area has many small businesses, including numerous fast food/takeaways. In 2007 there were developments to the precinct area, with new shops opening.
The area is served well by local transport, With a bus service and a local train station not far, it is easy to access and a good commuting area.
The square has also been entered into the Northumbria in Bloom competition in recent years, with regular work being carried out by members of the Eston Residents Association.
The town of Eston is filled with lots of charm, where old mining houses still stand.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has its main administrative offices in the Teesville area of Greater Eston, on Fabian Road.
Eston also includes the area of Whale Hill, which was formed in the late 1950s early 1960s. Whale Hill is a small area of about 1,000 homes and centre to them is a large members club and a row of shops, including a chemist, Post Office, supermarket, fish shop and a corner shop. The area also benefits from a large and local community centre where, local people can meet.
Eston has three major churches, two on the high street and one in Whale hill.
The area around Eston has some great natural beauty, To the east of Eston, there are some of the best beaches in North Yorkshire and Eston itself is placed at the foot of the Cleveland hills.
