The E 05 is part of the United Nations international E-road network. It is the westernmost north-south "reference road", running from Greenock, Scotland south through France to Algeciras, Spain.[1]
The E 05 follows the route Greenock - Paisley - Govan - Glasgow - Gretna - Carlisle - Penrith - Preston - Warrington - Stoke-On-Trent - Birmingham - Newbury - Southampton - Le Havre - Paris - Orléans - Tours - Poitiers - Bordeaux - Donostia - Burgos - Madrid - Córdoba - Sevilla - Cádiz - Algeciras

United Kingdom
Like all other E-roads, the E 05 is not signed or recognised in the United Kingdom. It follows the following roads:
- A8 and M8, Greenock into Glasgow
- M8 through Glasgow
- M74 and A74(M), Glasgow via Gretna to Carlisle
- M6 Carlisle via Penrith, Preston, Liverpool and Warrington to Birmingham
- The M6 Toll provides an alternative route in the Birmingham area.
- M42, M40, A34 and M3, Birmingham via Newbury to Southampton
The E 05 has a gap at the English Channel between Southampton and Le Havre, France. There is no direct ferry link, but a ferry from nearby Portsmouth connects to Le Havre.
France
In France, the E 05 is signed. It uses the following roads:
- A131 and A13, Le Havre to Paris
- The southwest part of the Périphérique around central Paris
- A6a and A10, Paris via Orléans, Tours and Poitiers to Bordeaux
- A630 around the west side of Bordeaux[citation needed]
- A63, RN10 and A63, Bordeaux to Spain
Spain
In Spain, the E 05 is signed. It uses the following roads:
- AP-8, France to San Sebastián
- N-I, AP-1 and A-1, San Sebastián via Burgos to Madrid; ill signposting (A-8, E 5, E 80, E 70) at the fork of N-I and A-8 past Donostia/San Sebastian (E 5 and E 80 head actually south alongside N-I)
- M-40 around the east side of Madrid
- N-IV, A-4 and AP-4, Madrid via Córdoba and Sevilla to Cádiz
- A-48 and N-340, Cádiz to Algeciras
