Evolution (And Flashback): The Very Best of Gill Scott-Heron is a compilation of work from 1970-1972 that finds the master of jazz poetry at his most militant. While the vitality of his approach on "Whitey on the Moon," "Get Out of the Ghetto Blues," and the title track is undeniable, the disc is really notable because it clearly displays the role Gil Scott-Heron played in developing the rap aesthetic. ~ Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide
