Biography

Not the computer program, but a skatecore/crossover band from Venice, CA (where else?), Excel were musical baby brothers to hometown heroes Suicidal Tendencies, and recorded a trio of albums which became quite popular with informed fans of the genre, if not the music-buying masses. Formed in 1985 by vocalist Dan Clemente, guitarist Adam Siegel, bassist Shaun Ross, and drummer Greg Saenz, Excel debuted in 1987 with the well-intentioned but overly ST-dependent Split Image. They later learned a few original tricks of their own for 1989's slightly improved The Joke's on You, but split up for a few years before recording 1995's funk-thrash swan song Seeking Refuge -- by which time they'd started sounding more like San Francisco's Mordred. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Excel is a now-defunct punk/metal fusion band from Venice, California. The band formed in 1983 under the name Chaotic Noise. After or when former drummer Evan Warech left the band, they changed their name to Excel in 1985. In 1995 they went on to more of a stoner metal sound on their last album Seeking Refuge.

Some members of the band were close friends with Suicidal Tendencies, who are from the same hometown as Excel. Guitarist Adam Siegel and drummer Greg Saenz (now in The Dwarves) contributed to singer Mike Muir's projects Cyco Miko and Infectious Grooves.

Excel released two albums, Split Image (1987) and The Joke's on You (1989), before Siegel joined the ranks with Infectious Grooves in 1990. In 1992 Siegel and Saenz left Excel to form power-trio My Head. After five years of silence, Excel returned to record their third and final album, Seeking Refuge (1995), and then broke up for good.

In 2003, ex-members of Excel considered legal action against the famous heavy metal band Metallica over the song "Enter Sandman", which they claim borrows heavily from the Excel's song "Tapping into the Emotional Void", originally included on The Joke's on You LP, released in 1989, two years before the release of Metallica's Black Album.

In May 2006, singer Dan Clements joined forces with former No Mercy singer Kevin "The Jerk" Guercio and former Suicidal Tendencies members Grant Estes, Amery Smith and Louiche Mayorga in the band AgainST.
