Executive Office Buildings
The two Executive Office Buildings near the White House provide offices for the Executive Office of the President and some units of the White House Office.
The Old Executive Office Building, located next to the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, provides office space for much of the Vice Presidential staff, the White House Office, and the National Security Council staff, as well as for the Office of Management and Budget and the Council of Economic Advisers. It also contains the White House Library and Research Center.
Built in 1875, the building housed the State, War, and Navy Departments until 1947. It was designed in French Second Empire style, with ornate stonework, including dormer windows, tiers of columns, a green copper mansard roof, and two dozen chimneys. It has 553 rooms and 440,250 square feet of office space. It was completely renovated and redecorated during Ronald Reagan's administration.
The New Executive Office Building, completed in 1968, houses the remaining Presidential agencies, such as the Office of Personnel Management. It is a 10-story structure of red brick, with 307,000 square feet of office space. It is located one block from the Old Executive Office Building, off Pennsylvania Avenue on Jackson Place. Although modern in style, its rooflines were designed to harmonize with the mansard style.
