Opko Health (formerly eXegenics) may have first found its calling in treating eye diseases, but has expanded its scope to include a variety of therapeutics. The firm, which discontinued its former drug development operations in 2003, revived itself in 2007 by merging with two privately held biotech companies: Froptix and Acuity Pharmaceuticals. Formerly focused on cancer and infectious diseases, the new and improved Opko targets ophthalmic conditions, and most recently, vaccine development. Lead ophthalmic candidate bevasiranib, developed using cutting-edge RNA interference technology, may treat the "wet" form of age-related macular degeneration, a cause of blindness.
