Extra

Wikipedia: Extra (gum)
Packages of Extra gum from the United States.

Extra is the name of the second sugarfree gum launched by Wrigley's in the United States (the first being Orbit in 1977). It was launched in 1984 and became one of the most popular brands of gum in the United States within a few years. Other variants include lollipops and the "Liquid Blast" gum which has a liquid centre.[where?]

Worldwide

In the United States, the product is available in at least twelve flavors, including Winterfresh, Spearmint, Peppermint, Classic Bubble Gum, Polar Ice and Supermint. Strawberry Banana, Island Cooler, Sweet Watermelon, Berry Pearadise, Berry Smoothie, and Mango Smoothie flavors are part of the Extra Fruit Sensations line introduced in 2008.

In Australia, many of the Extra flavours are the same as the ones offered in the US. When Extra was launched originally in Australia, Liz Smylie (Australian tennis champion) was used as the spokesperson for the product. Liz had a distinctive lisp which was used to make the campaign a success by having people emulate her voice in the adverts. the regular gum is available in Spearmint, Peppermint, Bubblegum, Berry, Blueberry, Strawberry, Wildberry, Watermelon, Melon, Liquid Centre and Green Apple, among others.

In Hong Kong, a line of gum from Extra came in four flavors, Sweetmint, Melon, Strawberry, and Orange. They featured the sweetener Xylitol and Aspartame[1]

In the United Kingdom, Extra is available in many forms, such as cool breeze, spearmint, fire, ice, and the product is the sponsor of the Hollyoaks television series. The product is also available in a mint tube and a mini-mints metal container, in peppermint and spearmint flavors. Extra Fire, a cinnamon variant, was released in the UK in 1994, and discontinued in 1998; the sugar free version has been discontinued since 2007.

In Canada, Extra gum comes in smaller pieces, exactly like Orbit gum. Originally having the same packaging as its American counterpart, the Canadian version took on a life of its own in 1994, with a new, different logo, and with new, unique flavours including Cherry and Peach (the latter was introduced in Australia in 2004 but was discontinued due to poor consistency). Since 2004, Canadian Extra has taken on packaging similar to Orbit (both gums are manufactured in Canada) and have reduced their flavors to those of Orbit's.

Discontinued flavors

Before introducing the mentholated "Cool Green Apple" and "Wildberry Frost",[where?] Extra had an "Original" flavour, which came in a bright magenta coloured package (as opposed to "Classic" in standard pink). This flavour was a unique blend of strawberry, bubblegum, and raspberry flavours. Consumer interest in this flavour diminished, and Wrigley's discontinued the product based on low consumer demand. Final shipments for Extra Original chewing gum were made July 1, 2003. Wrigley's has given no indication they have any plans to bring this "Original" flavor back.
