The eye is surprisingly tough, but any injury should be regarded as potentially dangerous and requiring expert medical attention. Direct blows are very serious because the retina can become detached. This may lead to blindness. The sports with the highest risk of eye injuries are boxing and martial arts. Other high-risk sports include basketball, waterpolo, and soccer, with the eye injuries usually caused by fingers and elbows. Racket sports also carry a high risk, especially squash, because the ball can be forced inside the eye socket.
