Eye Opener

Album Review: Eye Opener

Review

Although Neville Dickie had recorded seven previous albums (five of them solo) since the late '60s, this was the first one to get some attention in the United States. The talented British stride pianist performs 14 superior numbers from the likes of Fats Waller, Joe Sullivan, Bob Zurke, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, plus some early pop tunes. Highlights include "Beautiful Love," "My Little Pride and Joy," "Keep Your Temper," "Wolverine Blues" and Zurke's "Eye Opener." This LP gives listeners a strong introduction to the playing of Neville Dickie. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
