Fábio Deivison Lopes Maciel or just Fábio (born 30 September 1980 in Nobres, Mato Grosso) is a Brazilian football goalkeeper, as of 2005 plays for Cruzeiro.
Career
He has recently played for clubs such as União Bandeirante-PR, Vasco, and Atlético-PR. Fábio was called up to most of Brazil's friendly's in the months of August and September, 2006. Being called up by Brazilian head coach Dunga for a friendly against Norway in Oslo on August 16, 2006, though never had playing time, the game ended 1-1. He was also called up to play against Argentina and Wales on September 3 and September 5, 2006, respectively, but again, he did not play in these match, as Gomes remained Brazil number 1 under Dunga at that time.
He was delighted to have been included in one of Brazil's team's in September, but knew exactly where he stood and understood what his role in the team was, and stated he was happy to be part of the squad.
| Brazil has great keepers as the level has really gone up over the past few years and we have goalies of the
calibre of Rogério Ceni (São Paulo),
Fábio Costa (Santos) and Júlio César (Inter-ITA). I just want to calmly do what I
can to help the seleção. Fábio"#wp-_note-Brazil.28Sele.C3.A7.C3.A3o.29:Dunga.E2.80.99sBrazilianBets">[1] |
He has been fairly successful in his career winning the Copa do Brasil, the Campeonato Brasileiro, and the Copa Mercosur all in the same year, 2000. He has also won two state championship, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Campeonato Mineiro.
Fábio has won a couple of international championships as well. Such as the 1997 U-17 South American Youth Championship and FIFA U-17 World Cup. Along with that he was part of Brazil's winning side in the Copa América 2004, in Peru.
The first semester of 2007 wasn't very good for Fábio. Due to inconsistence and some very bad mistakes on the field (including a bizarre goal in the first leg of the state championsip against rivals Atlético in which he had his back to the field while the Atletico striker approached the box and scored), a good part of the Cruzeiro supporters asked for his removal of the starting squad.
Coincidentally, after this same derby, Fábio was out for three months supposedly because of an injury, alhought he played for the whole match, during which he didn't show any sign of severepain. He got back in the middle of July, got his starter status back and currently is one of the highlights of Cruzeiro, showing signs of recovering his old form. However, he hasn't been called for the Brazilian team in 2007.
