Falklands, battle of the, 1914. After dispatching Craddock's squadron at the battle of Coronel, von Spee's ships rounded Cape Horn and on 8 December 1914 attacked Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. However, the Germans found themselves fighting a much stronger British squadron under Vice-Admiral Sturdee, who sank all but one of von Spee's ships.
