Biography

Although perhaps best remembered as the wife of writer/photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964), diminutive Ukrainian actress Fania Marinoff enjoyed a brief but hectic screen career in the 1910s. Hers was a notable presence on the Broadway stage in such plays as Within the Law; the Arnold Daly production of George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man; and The Tempest. Marinoff was brought to the screen by the World company in 1914. Of her total of six feature films only one stands out: Life's Whirlpool (1916), a five-reel version of Frank Norris' mammoth novel McTeague with Marinoff as Trina. Since Life's Whirlpool appears to be lost, Fania's performance cannot be compared to ZaSu Pitts' bravura turn in Erich Von Stroheim's 1924 version of the novel, Greed. ~ Hans J. Fania Marinoff (Rus.: Фаня Маринофф) (March 20, 1890 – November 17, 1971) was a Russian-born American actress. She played supporting and lead roles in dozens of Broadway plays between 1903 and 1937, and eight U.S. silent movies between 1914 and 1917.

Born in Odessa, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), she was the youngest of 13 siblings. She came to the United States as a young child with her elder brother Louis, whom she lived with until she joined a traveling play company around the age of fourteen. She married Carl Van Vechten in 1914. They had met two years earlier, and their marriage lasted over 50 years, even though Van Vechten was apparently homo- or bisexual.

She died in Englewood, New Jersey, aged 81.
