Farrukhabad (fərʊkh'äbäd'), joint municipality with Fategarh (total 1991 pop. 208,727), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ganges River. It is a district administrative center and a market for tobacco, fruit, and potatoes. Perfume, cotton prints, and saltpeter are manufactured. A fort was founded (c.1714) on the site of the present-day town by the Afghan ruler Nawab Muhammad Khan. Farrukhabad was captured by the Marathas in 1751 and ceded to the British in 1802. The town's British garrison was attacked during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Farrukhābād (Hindi: फ़र्रुख़ाबाद, Urdu: فرّخ آباد), one of the important cities of Lower Doab Region in the State of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The city was founded in 1714 by Mohammed Bangash who named it after the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar [1]. Farrukhabad is situated on the bank of secrad river Ganga.

As of 2001 India census[2], where Farrukhabad-cum-Fatehgarh was considered a census unit, Farrukhabad had a population of 227,876. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Farrukhabad has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 58%. In Farrukhabad-cum-Fatehgarh, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure is quite good for the city. City has a mall and high class hotels like Hindustan and BS Mension. City roads are in great condition than many other cities of Uttar Pradesh. Leading brands like Levi's, Reebok, Koutons, Priknit, Outlaw and Adidas have opened their outlets in the city. Lohia Hospital is government hospital here. Mission Hospital and City Hosspital are leading private hospitals.

Industry

Farrukhabad has a large number of cold stores. As Potato is the biggest agricultural product of the district.

Handprinting work (here called as Jardozi work) is also a large industry, which employs thousands of workers.
