Fasolt (Wagner: Das Rheingold). Bassbar. A giant. He and his brother, Fafner, have been commissioned by Wotan to build Valhalla as a fortress for the gods. Their payment will be Freia, Wotan's sister-in-law. When the building is completed, Wotan is reluctant to pay the promised fee. By now Fasolt is feeling amorous towards Freia and becomes angry. Hearing of the hoard of gold from the Rhine, the giants suggest they be given this instead of Freia. After much thought and negotiation, Wotan agrees and hands over the gold, which he steals from Alberich, including the Ring on which Alberich has placed a curse. Fasolt and Fafner fight over the Ring and Fasolt is killed - the Ring has claimed its first victim. Aria: Halt! Nicht sie berührt! (‘Stop! Do not touch her!’). Created (1869) by Herr Petzer.
