This album is a reissue of classic performances of the requiems of Fauré and Duruflé by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The Fauré is heard in its 1900 version for full orchestra and organ, accompanied by the New Philharmonia Orchestra being conducted by David Willcocks. The Duruflé, conducted by Philip Ledger, is performed in its most intimate version, accompanied by cello and organ. The performances are of the highest quality; the Choir of King's College, Cambridge sings with the rich tone and discipline characteristic of English men and boy's choirs. The conductors lead tender, supple readings that are entirely appropriate for these gentle but passionate scores. The soloists are consistently effective; only Janet Baker is a star, but treble Robert Chilcott and baritones John Carol Case and Stephen Roberts more than hold their own in their nuanced performances. The CD is filled out with a graceful reading of Fauré's Pavane. Having such fine performances of these requiems on a single disc makes this a very attractive album. ~ Stephen Eddins, All Music Guide
