Mellah, Fawzi (b. 1946). Tunisian novelist, essayist, and playwright. In his essays and creative work Mellah deals with post-colonial social problems that have their roots in the past as well as with myths and legends that have currency and relevance in today's Tunisia. His novels, Le Conclave des pleureuses (1987) and Elissa la reine vagabonde (1988), draw on reality and myth to explore the multiple layers of the Maghrebian psyche and imagination.
