The Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission (FMSHRC) helps decide cases concerning the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977. Its administrative law judges work on cases at a trial level, and the commission's five members (appointed by the President) offer appellate review. The commission evaluates alleged safety and health violations and determines penalties. The majority of cases involve civil penalties charged against mine operators. Other types cases include requests to close mines, safety-related discrimination, and compensation following the closure of a mine.
