Ferdinand Berthoud (19 March 1727 – 20 June 1807), Swiss chronometer-maker, was born at Plancemont, Neuchâtel.

Settling in Paris in 1745, he gained a great reputation for the excellence and accuracy of his marine chronometers. He succeeded the pioneering work of Henry Sully.[1] He was a member of the Institute and a fellow of the Royal Society of London, and among other works wrote Essai sur l'horlogerie (1763). He died in 1807 at Montmorency, Seine et Oise. He was succeeded in business by his nephew, Louis Berthoud (1759–1813).
He contributed to the development of the chronometer, together with Pierre Le Roy.[2]
