Biography

Spanish director Fernando Colomo's professional debut, a documentary about Argentine president Campora's visit to Spain entitled Mañana Llega el Presidente/Tomorrow the President Arrives (1972), was promptly banned by government censors. Colomo had greater success with his fictional feature debut, Tigres de Papel/Paper Tigers (1977), a smart, ironic portrait of middle-class intellectuals. This and many of Colomo's subsequent films were produced through his own production company, La Salamandra P.C. Colomo turned to producing in 1980 with Fernando Trueba's directorial debut Opera Prima/First Effort (1980). He has since become renowned for promoting the careers of similarly talented young directors. Colomo is credited for creating the Spanish comedy sub-genre la comedia madrileña. The best-known examples of this style include Alegre ma non Tropo (1994) and Eso/It (1995). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
