Fi Helps to Shape Living Beings

African Mythology: Fi Helps to Shape Living Beings

Jen/Nigeria

Fi, the supreme being, is associated with the sun. The Jen believe in a second deity, Ma, the servant of Fi.

He fashions all living things as a potter fashions a pot, and if he is careless or in a capricious mood he fashions men in ugly guise. He is the great purveyor, and obtains from Fi all things that are necessary for men, the fruits of the earth and the rain. Among his subordinates are Umwa, the war god, who is attended by Nimbwi, the whirlwind. His immediate officers are the Kue, tutelary spirits, who represent the host of ancestral ghosts. See also: Ama, Chido.
