(′fī·bər ′stres)

(mechanics) The tensile or compressive stress on the fibers of a fiber metal or other fibrous material, especially when fiber orientation is parallel with the neutral axis. Local stress through a small area (a point or line) on a section where the stress is not uniform, as in a beam under bending load.
