History

Fife Fire and Rescue Service was formed in 1985 from Fife Fire Brigade, however its creation was a result of the Fire Services Act 1947. The service operates as a whole and is not divided in to separate divisions as is the case with some fire services in the United Kingdom. The FRS provides fire cover to a large rural area; many stations are retained as there is no need to operate a fully staffed fire station in rural areas.[2]

Stations

The service operates 14 fire stations, some of these however are retained, and some whole-time. There are currently

  • Eight retained fire stations.

Anstruther, Auchtermuchty, Burntisland, Cupar, Newburgh, St Andrews (plans to change St Andrews fire station to a day manned station are being considered), St Monans, Tayport.

  • Six whole-time stations.

Dunfermline (scheduled for closure), Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Lochgelly, Methil, Rosyth (scheduled for closure).

A new station is being built at Pitreavie, replacing Dunfermline and Rosyth and is due for completion in early 2010.
