A term invented in 1983 for inexpensive varietal wines typically sealed with a cork-a group of wines that are a step up from jug wines. Like jug wines, fighting varietal wines primarily use grapes from California's central valley. Unlike jug wines, however, they are typically made from a single variety (such as cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, or zinfandel) and are of perceptibly higher quality.
