The last movement of a multi-movement instrumental composition; the concluding section of an act of an opera or other stage work. The concluding movement in a set of variations (e.g. Schumann's Etudes symphoniques and Elgar's Enigma Variations) is often designated ‘finale’, indicating a freer and wider-ranging treatment of the theme than is found earlier in the work. The operatic ensemble finale, developed in Italian comic opera (especially dramma giocoso) during the 18th century, represents an essential step from the late Baroque number opera to the continuous style of 19th-century music drama.

The last movement of a sonata or symphony, or the last section of an opera.

Finale may indicate the final movement of a sonata, symphony, or concerto or of another piece of non-vocal classical music which has several movements, or a prolonged final sequence at the end of an act of an opera or musical theatre work.[1] "The rondo is the form par excellence used for final movements, and...its typical character and structural properties accord perfectly with those thought desirable in a sonata finale of the early nineteenth century."[2] Carl Czerny observes, "that first movements and finales ought to—and in practice actually do—proclaim their contrasted characters already in their opening themes."[3]
