Review

While she's contributed here and there to soundtracks (Disney's 2005 ice skating romp Go Figure, for example), Finally out of P.E. is Raising Dad and Sleepover alumnus Brie Larson's first real leap into music. It's pretty standard fare for the Nickelodeon nation. "She Said" and "Life After You" are slick, empowering pop of the meticulously layered and processed type that's starting to sound pretty tired in 2005, and "Ugly" is the bittersweet, ultimately triumphant ballad. Larson's thin vocal isn't distinctive -- she's interchangeable with Hope Partlow. But on the plus side her team of writers and producers manage some wit and genuinely teen-focused themes, as well as a few memorable melodies. And since so much of mid-2000s teen pop sounds so similar, anything that lends Larson buoyancy and her own voice is a plus. "Whatever" is the album's best arrangement, with a mild R&B flavor in the verses and a snappy chorus, while "Done With Like" ("I'm too young to be jaded!") and the quietly rebellious "Loser in Me" let Larson be the adolescent that she is. The title track is even better. Larson fights through some heavy-handed pitch correction on the vocal and the canned instrumentation to deliver a humorously awkward tale of a girl with rock star dreams who's stuck on earth in gym class. "I play guitar/But your class that won't get me far," she sings. "And I try/But my running sucks/And I try/But I hate doing chin-ups." Brie Larson won't reach rocktastic heaven with Finally out of P.E. But in its better moments she's visible behind its safety-glass formula. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Finally Out Of P.E. is the debut album on Casablanca Records/Universal Records from Brie Larson, an American singer and actress. The album features 13 tracks, most of then were written by Brie, and focuses on the ups and down of being a teenager.

In an interview, she said

"I think that I write about stuff that others don't write about. I don't have a bunch of love songs cuz I don't really have much boy experience. I just write about what I am actually going through in my real life. That's where the title from my album comes from - Finally out of P.E. My P.E. teacher didn't like me at all, which was hard to deal with cuz I was usually such a teachers' pet. So when I found out I got my record deal, I was like, 'Yes, I'm finally out of P.E.'"[1]

Due to many delays in release dates, the album was expected to be released in the fall 2004, but just shipped in the fall of 2005, after more than 6 release date changes; and lack of promotion from record label, the album only sold 4,000 copies in the United States.

Some digital releases of the album also includes "Go Your Own Way", a bonus track featured in the album's original tracklist but which was later replaced by "Hope Has Wings". The original tracklist also did not included "Life After You", song that was recorded after the album was already done, fact that made the album get pushed back.

  • The digital download version of the CD have one additional bonus track, called "Go Your Own Way". The song was featured in the original album tracklist, but was later replaced by "Hope Has Wings".
  • "Invisible Girl", which Brie wrote at age 12, is the song that convinced record executive Tommy Mottola to sign Brie to Casablanca Records without seeing what she looked like at the age of 13. The song is about not being noticed and overlooked.
  • All the tracks were recorded in 2004, except "Life After You", recorded in 2005.
  • The lead single, "She Said", is also featured in Disney Channel's original movie Go Figure.
  • "Hope Has Wings" is the end credit track in the movie Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. The song's music video appears as a bonus feature on the movie's DVD.
  • "Whatever" was intended to be Brie's second single, but was canceled and replaced by "Life After You". However, the song was released to Radio Disney.
  • Two other songs were intended to be singles, "Shoebox" and "Falling Into History" (due to the her official site's media player, with the singles from the album). Was expected a video to "Falling Into History" in the spring 2006, but the two singles were canceled.
  • Some of the tracks were published by Breezeway Publishing, established by her own self.
  • Avril Lavigne originally recorded "Falling Into History" for her debut album Let Go, but it didn't make the tracklist.
