Biography

In Great Britain, Fionn Regan is signed to Bella Union Records, an atmospheric dream pop label owned by former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde and home to acts like Robin Guthrie's ultra-atmospheric Violet Indiana. In the United States, Fionn Regan is signed to Lost Highway Records, an alternative country and roots rock imprint that's home to Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, and Tift Merritt. The impressive thing is that the engaging singer and songwriter is a perfect fit for both labels. Born and raised in the coastal city of Bray, Ireland, Regan absorbed folk and blues influences alongside the usual rock & roll (in interviews, he has claimed inspiration ranging from Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie to the Velvet Underground and Nirvana) due to his artistic family's bohemian existence living and working at a seaside resort hotel. Picking up piano, violin, and guitar at an early age from his musician father, Regan was performing in public before he reached his tenth birthday and busking across the country by his mid-teens. Resettling in Brighton, England, Regan signed with the small indie Anvil Records and released two EPs, 2003's Reservoir and 2004's Hotel Room, before connecting with the more established Bella Union imprint. In search of a live, natural sound, Regan recorded his debut album, The End of History, largely in an abandoned stone barn. The album was released in Great Britain in the summer of 2006, garnering considerable praise and regular comparisons to both Damien Rice and Nick Drake, as well as two hit singles in "Put a Penny in the Slot" and "Be Good or Be Gone." Lost Highway scheduled the American release of The End of History for summer 2007. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Overview

Regan's first releases were the single, "Little Miss Drunk", and three EPs titled Hotel Room, Reservior and Campaign Button, which were released on a small indie label, Anvil Records [1]. Following these releases, in 2006, Regan signed to former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde's independent record label, Bella Union, in the UK, resulting in Regan's debut album The End of History being released on August 7, 2006. Following his UK success, Regan was subsequently signed by the American label Lost Highway Records. The End of History was released in the U.S. on July 10, 2007.

The End of History was produced by Regan himself (mixing the album with Simon Raymonde). Mojo magazine gave the album four stars in a review that dubbed the disc "a debut that oozes rare confidence, startling maturity and originality".[citation needed] Other publications such as The Times[3] and The Guardian[4] also gave the album four out of five stars.

Regan has played many festivals around the world including the 2007 Glastonbury Festival, XPoNential Music Festival in Camden, New Jersey, Electric Picnic (Ireland), Summercase (Spain), Bestival (Isle of Wight) ACL (Austin, Texas) and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (San Francisco).[citation needed]

Regan was nominated for two Meteor Music Awards (Best Male and Best Newcomer) in 2006[citation needed] and The End of History was nominated for Irish Album of the Year at the Choice Music Prize.[5] and was shortlisted for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize.[6]

The single "Be Good or Be Gone" has been used in the television dramas Grey's Anatomy, Nearly Famous, and Skins. His song "Put A Penny In The Slot" has been offered as an iTunes Free Download of the Week.

Fionn Regan has recently finished recording his second studio album, Shadow of an Empire, which is scheduled to be released on February 8 2010. [7]
